Do you really need a Dishwasher?
Do you really need a dishwasher in your kitchen? Not really if you live in a country like Malaysia where the cost of running water is relatively cheap.
A mid-range Japanese dishwasher (washes up to 83 pieces) costs about RM1,600 after sales discount. The majority of Malaysian households use 20,000 litres of water per month which costs RM10. Do the math and you'll realise that the dishwasher may not last 13 years.
Handwashing gives you good workout and here's a few tricks to further reduce your water bill:
1. If you do not already have one, buy a tap shower head as it will rinse more efficiently.
2. Organize, leave your greasy cooking utensils at the bottom of your sink then stack the plates and cutleries on top, do the cleaning only after each meal.
3. Scrape your plates or pans thoroughly before soaking them.
4. Half fill the sink with soapy water (warm is best), turn off the tap, soak for a while before cleaning the cutleries and plates first (as they tend to be less greasy) finishing with the cooking utensils.
5. Stack the cutleries and plates aside (depending on the space available), then rinse with the tap turned on at half flush. When that is done it will be easier to finish cleaning the greasy pans or pots.
6. Read the dish cleaner washing instructions to maximise the cleaning efficiency of the product.
